Know Your Inner Compass

We live in a world of abundance, friction, disharmony, and character-building days. We live in a continuously changing, moving, and growing world with roles and responsibilities that are both fluid and stagnant. We go from one day to the next in a continuous cycle of automation, traditionally following the same trajectory as if our life is robotically assembled from when we wake up to when we go to sleep. For most of us, it is the same routine, but why? Is it because our daily routine has become so much of a habit that if we take an alternate route, it disrupts our flow, or is it that it is easier not to follow the road less traveled?

Regardless of your response, knowing your inner compass can help delineate some of the choices you make. It can help alleviate the transition from being responsive to reactive when interacting with others. It can be utilized as the barometer to monitor in hopes of not reaching your not-so-welcome boiling point. First, define your interpretation of the stressor/ situation. Next, use your inner compass to identify your triggers, where you feel emotions in your body (i.e., anger, frustration, irritation, overwhelmed, etc.), how those emotions show up internally and externally, and determine an action plan to adjust as needed. This adjustment may take the form of a personal time out, outsourcing, walking away, addressing the issue, or shifting to a more problem-focused (external – environmental change) or emotion-focused (internal – emotional change) coping style. It all starts with knowing your inner compass.
